Opera Christmas Garb
Here it is - dressed for Christmas. This may not be such a big deal for any other country - but for this "former" communist country - it is simply TOO RED. Especially, considering that this was the location of the PM's speech for the anniversary of the 1956 uprising.
Yes, the sign claims ELEKRA - but interestingly enough all of the posters throughout town that advertise the performance have a green background. So, "who's zoomin' who?"
The building below sits directly across Andrassy ut from the Opera. It was the former Balett Institute. The building had been vacant for some time and is rumored to be considered as a luxury hotel (yet another). You may remember this building from the crane photo. The crane had been set up on the right side to raise another floor onto the existing structure - the modern way to multiply scarse downtown building space.

I just don't see it. Where are the Christmas decorations? What's ELEKTRA?
It's kinda odd, but not necessarily commie.
see, it is only me then - to me it just screams. The red IS the Christmas decor - Elektra is a one act opera by Richard Strauss.
They look like big red pants.
Well, how not to agree with you. At the other side Xmas and red it's winning couple... Anyway and especially in this case I agree with you.
P.S. Really nice that story about women and apples and yes there's something true ;-)
So nice of you to pop into rabaul - so I'm returning the visit!!! i haven't been to Budapest so it is great to visit your beautiful city thru your eyes!!!
It is VERY red...
Just popped in to say hi.
Red is Xmas Do they decorate the streets and shops at Christmas Time.. Ty. for your lovely comments on my Dear friends, They live 3 hrs away and always love to get in the garden to help me visit me. See my special post on the side bar or go to my first entry in archives..
It is certainly a beautiful building but the red might be a bit much. Perhaps people entering for a concert have a less jarring view.
I agree that the red is a bit much, isn't it? I thought the same thing that avcr8teur did - big, red pants! The building is lovely, and one would think they could decorate it a little more elegantly. . .
By the way, I answered your comment on my blog today.
maybe its not so much the decor color as it is the difference between the building and the decoration--as the building is a historical landmark and the decoration is perhaps too much on the contemporary side? Or maybe because there is too much color saturation focused in such a small section of the building instead of being more balanced out.
Smiling Hello from Istanbul:) Thanks for your visit on my journal. When I enter your blog, then my eyes firstly locked on the side note regarding Apples and Women, LoL:) Well, nothing more to say but definately true approach;)
Back to your current posting, it is so wonderful RED, I love it! If it is a heritage, then they could ornate it in other way more classics...
Maybe they'll add a little something on that red, like little lights all over it. That would make it Christamassy and would tone done the red. But I guess you won't avoid the association of ideas with such a location.
But the red is actually quite nice! hehe...
